My best Evolution story:
32Kg (just over 5 stones), and counting …
We are meant to evolve. A multi-decade unhealthy relationship with food, fad diets, and yo-yo weight loss and gain had become both a way of life and an intrinsic part of me.
I realised in late 2021 that I had lost hope in being a healthy weight, or having a healthy level of fitness and a healthy relationship with food. The pandemic had taken its toll and less and less clothes fitted. Eventually, finding the emotional strength to go above the line with family and friends, I committed to fixing my problem. Joining a coaching program with a small group of people, sharing our experiences almost daily, my nutrition became important to me, and my exercise regime was a non-negotiable part of my day. Sleep, hydration, and meditation featured as balanced parts to my life’s rhythm. I was evolving to learn to respect myself and be a little bit selfish too.
By Christmas 2022, my 10k pace was back (just) under one hour – something that I hadn’t done in many years. My strength, control, and balance had all hugely improved. I was cycling again, and not ashamedly alone, but with an avid, very supportive cycling friend. I’d resisted new clothes to the point where I really had to buy some smaller things, and I purchased them from shops that previously I wouldn’t have even gone into, knowing that nothing would fit. At a family event, my son said he’d looked at a group of people, saw me amongst them, and didn’t recognise me. “I’ve never seen you look like this Dad” – he’s 29 years old.
I’m now fortunate to have more confidence and inner self-belief, as well as better health. That’s helped me in my work to understand new dimensions of professional challenges that people who choose to work with me may be facing. My goals are still a work in progress, with more to go both on the scales and in my head too. But I’ve proven to myself that I can still evolve, am still evolving, with positive consequences that ripple out beyond the obvious and immediate.
