It was late May 2017. I was sitting outside a coffee shop next to our Windsor office, enjoying a single espresso and the Spring sunshine, doing what I recommend senior leaders do – having some thinking time – when I had an ‘epiphany moment’.
Having spent over 30 years in the tech industry, building and leading high performing and highly-motivated teams, I began to realise that my passion for the job I had always loved was there, but only for 50% of the job specification (at the time I was SVP & GM for EMEA at a tech start-up).
When it came to carrying out the parts of my job that I had always loved (meeting people, coaching, team alignment, mentoring, advising, solving complex business problems, etc.) my energy levels and passion were boundless. Conversely, the opposite was true for parts of the job that I no longer enjoyed (notably, the operational side of the business) despite these being a strength of mine.
Around the same time, we had expanded our offices into Berlin and Paris, both of which were in WeWork buildings. WeWork’s slogan of “Do What You Love” was everywhere and that day it really hit home. This was my calling!
I have always advocated that re-invention is going to be necessary for all of us as we work later in life; if we want to have the energy to work well into our 70’s then we need to have a passion for what we are doing.
Fast forward to Spring 2018 during which I set up my own company Vanguard Leadership Ltd, focusing on my two biggest passions – advising tech start-ups and coaching executives. Now I get to work with some really impressive people within some amazing companies, ‘Doing what I love’!
